Asbestos and hazardous materials experts promoting safe work and living environment
For over 30 years, the Finnish Federation of Asbestos and Dust Renovation (SAP ry) has been a key player in developing best practices within the asbestos and hazardous material sectors, with the goal of ensuring safe working and living environments.
Establishment and Expertise
SAP ry was founded in 1988 at the request of the occupational safety authority when legislators working on asbestos laws and guidelines realized the need for an expert community representing knowledge and experience in asbestos and hazardous dust.
Continuous Development with Industry Professionals
Our membership includes companies and professionals from various sectors such as renovation and demolition, laboratories, equipment and material suppliers, asbestos and hazardous material experts (AHA), building health experts (RTA), and educational organizations. Currently, nearly 100 key companies and organizations are involved in our activities, with a combined turnover exceeding €100 million in the hazardous materials sector.
The methods developed by our member companies have become part of the industry's best practices and are widely adopted in areas such as general dust control in the construction industry in Finland. Current hot topics include the new EU Asbestos Directive, training programs, and the development of AV instruction cards.
Focus Areas
PROMOTING SAFE PRACTICES IN THE INDUSTRY
Asbestos and hazardous materials in buildings pose health risks not only to construction workers but also to building occupants. Safe asbestos and hazardous material work is based on expertise, proper working methods, and the use of appropriate equipment and protective gear. Our activities promote safety in all areas of asbestos and hazardous material work, from practical applications to legislative developments.
RAISING THE OVERALL QUALITY AND SERVICE LEVEL IN THE INDUSTRY
We monitor international developments in the field and adopt best practices from other countries, selecting methods and technologies suitable for Finland. Examples include fit testing for respirators according to ISO-16079-3/2017 standards and DOP testing for air handling equipment to measure leakage.
COLLABORATION WITH AUTHORITIES AND STAKEHOLDERS, BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY
As an expert organization, we actively participate in discussions and developments regarding asbestos and hazardous material legislation. We also work with various stakeholders, including safety and occupational health organizations, to further develop the industry. Internationally, we collaborate as a member of the European Decontamination Institute (EDI) and have established partnerships, such as with the Slovak Demolition Association. In Finland, our partner organizations include STYL ry and the JVT Drying Contractors Association.
DEVELOPING TRAINING PROGRAMS
Our training activities began in the 1980s with mandatory courses for asbestos removal workers and supervisors. Since then, we have expanded into a comprehensive training network for experts and companies, always prioritizing the safety of workers and the working environment.
